What Self-Driving Cars Still Can't Do
An honest assessment of the real limitations still facing self-driving technology today.
Self-driving technology has made real, measurable progress, but coverage often overstates how close fully driverless cars are to handling every situation a human driver can.
Good weather and mapped areas are the comfort zone
Current self-driving systems perform best in well-mapped urban areas with clear lane markings and predictable traffic patterns. Heavy rain, snow, or fog significantly degrade the sensors these systems depend on, and performance in genuinely unfamiliar or poorly mapped areas remains far less reliable than in a system's well-tested home territory.
Unusual, one-off situations remain the hardest problem
Systems trained on huge amounts of driving data handle common situations well but can struggle with genuinely novel scenarios: an unusual construction zone, a person directing traffic by hand, or an object in the road that doesn't match anything in the training data. Human drivers rely on general reasoning to handle novelty; current systems rely more heavily on pattern recognition from prior examples.
The regulatory and legal picture is unsettled
Determining liability when a self-driving system is involved in a crash, and establishing consistent regulations across different regions, remains unresolved in many places. This isn't a technology limitation exactly, but it's a real barrier to wider deployment regardless of how capable the underlying technology becomes.
Full autonomy is narrower than it sounds
Many vehicles marketed with autonomous-sounding names still require an attentive human driver ready to take over at any moment. Only a small number of services currently operate truly driverless vehicles without a safety driver, and typically only within specific, carefully mapped city areas rather than everywhere.
The realistic near-term picture
Expect continued expansion of geographically limited, truly driverless services in specific cities, alongside broader adoption of advanced driver assistance in ordinary consumer cars, rather than a sudden universal shift to fully autonomous vehicles everywhere.
