Wireless, standalone headsets became the norm
Early VR required a tethered connection to a powerful gaming computer, limiting both mobility and accessibility. Standalone headsets with all the necessary computing built directly into the headset itself have become the mainstream default, dramatically lowering the barrier to entry and removing the tangled cables that made early VR awkward.
Resolution and comfort have both improved substantially
Display resolution has improved enough to significantly reduce the noticeable pixelation, sometimes called the "screen door effect," that characterized earlier headsets, while better weight distribution and padding have made extended sessions considerably more comfortable than before.
Tracking no longer needs external sensors
Early VR systems often required separate sensors placed around the room to track headset and controller position accurately. Current headsets handle this tracking using cameras built into the headset itself, making setup in a new room dramatically simpler.
Mixed reality has blurred the line with AR
Many current headsets can show the real world through built-in cameras and overlay virtual objects onto it, blending virtual reality and augmented reality use cases into a single device rather than requiring separate hardware for each.
What's still holding VR back
