What It Actually Takes to Put Humans on Mars

A crewed Mars mission is a favorite tech headline. Here's a realistic look at what actually stands in the way.

Sending humans to Mars is a fundamentally harder problem than reaching the Moon: the trip takes months each way, communication delays make real-time control from Earth impossible, and astronauts would need to survive largely self-sufficiently once there.

The radiation and health problem

Outside Earth's protective magnetic field for an extended trip, astronauts face significant radiation exposure that current spacecraft shielding only partially addresses, alongside the physical toll of prolonged weightlessness on bones and muscles.

Why the return trip is the hard part

Getting to Mars is only half the mission; returning requires either pre-positioning fuel and a return vehicle on the Martian surface years in advance or manufacturing fuel there directly, both approaches still being actively tested rather than proven at the scale a crewed mission would need.
